The Noel Freidline Quintet

Formed in 1991 the Noel Freidline Quintet got its start performing all over the state of Florida. This quickly led to appearances all over the country including performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the Northsea Jazz Festival, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival, the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, the Riverbend Festival, the Nashville Summer Lights Festival, the Bethlehem Muzikfest, and many others. They celebrated the new millennium by landing a three-year house band position at the crown of the Las Vegas strip, The Bellagio. Other notable performances include the legendary Birdland in New York and actress Julia Roberts’ 35th birthday party.

Since their inception the NFQ has released seven CD’s, their most recent a live recording from a legendary jazz club in Hilton Head, South Carolina called The Jazz Corner. Other NFQ recordings include “Carry Me Home,” a collection of sacred jazz, “Noel,” a Christmas album released in 1999, and “Four Nights at the Slammer,” a double CD recorded in the home of Penn Gillette of the comedy magic duo “Penn & Teller.” This recording was released nationally and broke into the top 20 on the national jazz radio charts.

The Noel Freidline Quintet is known for the way they repackage familiar songs, pulling non-traditional songs into the jazz idiom. Following a long tradition of jazz musicians borrowing from styles outside the jazz idiom, the NFQ’s repertoire spans everything from Duke Ellington to Frank Sinatra to Doris Day to The Doors and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Bandleader Freidline is fond of saying “We like to give the audience something they have heard, but that they have never heard before.”
