For James Brown, it was one more show in a long run of legendary 1960s performances. For two Richmond teenagers – cousins and fledgling musicians making the pilgrimage to the city’s storied Mosque theater – it was a transitory experience. Coleman Lyttle and Steve Paulini, Flashback’s respective founder and music director, have chased the dream ever since: performing in an ensemble that highlights tight danceable rhythms, a hot horn section, and dynamic vocal performances. Flashback formed in the early ’80s with that guiding vision, and the current nine member lineup delivers on a level the Godfather himself would surely enjoy. Our former starstruck teens are joined onstage by seven more veterans of the regional music scene – alumni of groups like Casper, Groove Spot, and Sandcastle – as they “flashback” and flash forward through the music of every decade of their careers. The group’s stellar frontline vocalists, Marshall Smith and Barbara Lipford, are ably supported by a stinging three piece horn section and a half dozen lead singers scattered among the membership. While most have worked and traveled as full-time musicians, Flashback intentionally avoids burnout by accepting a limited number of dates each year. Audiences see an energetic show by performers who obviously enjoy what they’re doing!
A longtime first call for corporate and civic events as well as weddings and parties, Flashback revisited its ’60s roots in the summer of 2013 when it shared the stage with the Beach Boys during Innsbrook Afterhours, turning in one of the standout sets of the entire season. The band continues its annual performance at Richmond’s massive Party of the First Part, and recently entertained at a bipartisan event honoring former Governors Holton and Wilder. Successful outings are due in no small part to Coleman’s diligence in personally advancing every date – down to the smallest detail 30 years of experience can encounter.
